Day 1 – Crossing into Panjakent, Tajikistan

If you’re waking up in Samarkand this morning, today is day one of your Tajikistan adventure. It’s only an hour by road to the Tajik border and almost immediately you’ll see the Zeravshan Range rise ahead. Crossing this border on foot isn’t long in distance, but timing? That’s part of the experience. No need to worry, though, your guide will handle the paperwork and conversations, leaving you to admire your first glimpses of Tajikistan’s wild and mountainous landscapes—it’s the kind of view you won’t get tired of anytime soon.

Panjakent was once a Silk Road trading hub and you’ll spend the afternoon exploring its blended cultural history. And when you’re roaming the Bronze Age city ruins just outside of town, you’ll see why it’s sometimes called the Pompeii of Central Asia.

Roll up your sleeves for dinner tonight because you’re joining a local family to make Qurutob–Tajikistan’s ultimate comfort dish—torn bread soaked in a tangy yogurt sauce and fresh garden-picked toppings. Best enjoyed together, you’ll begin learning the ways of Tajik life, straight from your hosts.

ACCOMMODATION: Panjakent Plaza (or similar), Panjakent
INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 2 – The Seven Lakes & Village Life

Today’s drive leads into the Fann Mountains and Haft Kul: seven lakes said to have been formed from the broken-hearted tears of seven sisters—each one a different color to reflect that sister’s mood and character. A gentle hike ending with a picnic lunch lets you soak in the natural silence here.

Continue to Gazza village in the afternoon, where tea is poured, songs are sung, and you’ll spend the night in a simple family-run guesthouse. (Don’t worry, your luggage will meet you there). What tonight lacks in polish, it makes up for in genuine mountain hospitality. It’s often the simplest stays that leave the fondest and longest impressions, and the stories you’ll tell well after you’re home.

ACCOMMODATION: Guesthouse with attached bathrooms (or similar), Gazza Village
INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 3 – Voru & Iskandarkul

Morning brings you to Voru village, where terraced homes are stacked into the hillside and the flat rooftops double as village pathways—so you may find yourself walking across them, as you head to a home-cooked lunch being prepared for you and your Harriet crew.

From here, the road climbs into the mountains further, to Iskandarkul Lake—its name and stories tied to the legend of Alexander the Great, known locally as Iskandar. Legend has it that his army passed through these mountains, and that his beloved horse, Bucephalus, was lost to the lake’s deep waters. A short walk brings you to the nearby waterfall, where glacial water crashes down, before you continue by road to Khujand, one of Central Asia’s oldest cities.

ACCOMMODATION: Grand Hotel (or similar), Khujand
INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 4 – Khujand Connections

Khujand is a city where history and daily life intertwine. You’ll wander through Khujand’s Fortress and its Museum of Archeology, before stepping inside Panjshanbe Bazaar. Here the stalls overflow with color and everyday life plays out around you. Locals in embroidered caps and traditional dress are a familiar sight from the countryside, and that continues here in the city. Later, you’ll meet students at a local university, eager to practice English and exchange stories—a highlight that turns travel into friendship.

Dinner is shared as the fondest of farewell celebrations, with your guide and your fellow Hatties

ACCOMMODATION: Grand Hotel (or similar), Khujand
INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 5 – Farewell Journey

It’s time to say goodbye to your mountain life because your final morning takes you north across the border and back into Uzbekistan. By midday, you’ll reach Tashkent Airport for your onward flight. The journey ends, but the memories—mountain lakes, village smiles, and friendships made will stay with you long after you’re home. Gather your Harriet crew for one last hug–it’s not goodbye, it’s let’s meet again soon!

Included: Breakfast
